A series of research projects to assess the impact and effectiveness of various elements of the Government’s Energy Efficiency Best Practice and Environmental Technology Best Practice programmes. These included studies focussing on:
... the Environment & Energy Helpline which provides advice, information and best practice guidance to UK businesses. ... the Site Visit consultancy service provided to SME’s.... the requirements of businesses in the Printing sector from the Government’s Envirowise programme.... the Centre for the Analysis and Demonstration of Demonstrated Energy Technologies (CADDET), which provides businesses with information on new energy efficiency technologies which have been applied in demonstration projects.
The research typically involved telephone interviews with a sample of business which had used each of these Government sponsored schemes, in order to follow-up on their satisfaction with the service, the usefulness of the information provided, etc. and also to examine overall outcomes in relation to changing the business’ energy use and reducing CO2 emissions.

Tailoring energy efficiency services
On behalf of the Carbon Trust, a research project amongst new and/or inexperienced Energy Managers across a wide range of industry sectors. The survey used both qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative (telephone interviews) research techniques to assess the key requirements of this audience from the Government’s Action Energy programme. Target companies were larger businesses with >250 employees and/or annual turnover in excess of £30 million. Within each company, respondents were those responsible for managing the use of energy in the business and/or dealing with energy suppliers. Screening questions were used to qualify only those who were relatively new to the ‘Energy Manager’ role (i.e. appointed within the last 12 months) and/or those with no specific technical background related to energy. The research results were used to help develop the most effective means of targeting information and services to businesses taking their first steps towards active monitoring and management of their energy use; and so maximise the take-up of energy efficiency measures and best practice.

Profiling the waste & recycling sector
Several surveys carried out in conjunction with a leading environmental consultancy, looking at the handling and recycling of waste.
One project comprised an evaluation of 13 feasibility trials of recycling services provided to SMEs implemented by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme, to assess their overall effectiveness. This involved a total of 450 telephone interviews with participants (i.e. SMEs who joined the recycling scheme) and non-participants (i.e. SMEs who were invited, but who did not join the scheme).
A related project was undertaken on behalf of Envirolink Northwest, a not-for-profit organisation set up to aid the development and growth of the energy and environmental technologies and services sector in the North West of England. The research involved 500 telephone interviews across businesses in the recycling and waste sector within the region, in order to provide a comprehensive profile of the sector as a whole in terms of company capabilities, capacities, future plans, etc. and create a better understanding of the waste streams and volumes being processed.
